UPEHC Leads Egypt's National Technical Working Group
On 01 September 2009, Egypt has established its own National Technical Working Group (NTWG). The first meeting was kindly hosted by the Union of Producers and Exporters of Horticultural Crops (UPEHC) - supplier member of GLOBALGAP – in Cairo who will also be the host company of the NTWG. As chairman, Mr. Medhat El-Melegui of UPEHC was elected.
The meeting was also attended by H.E. Mr. Amin Abaza, the Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation
Tasks of the NTWG would include the development of the Interpretation Guideline that is customized for local conditions and the preparation of additional translations where needed.

he Union of Producers and Exporters of Horticultural Crops (UPEHC) is the biggest union in the field of agriculture in Egypt. It was established in 1971 under a special law endorsed by the Egyptian parliament and presidency to boos Egypt's horticultural producion in quality and quantity.

As set by its issuing law, major goals of UPEHC establishment can be summarized as follows:
- Enhancement of the Egyptian horticultural industry.
- Development of Egyptian horticultural exports.
- Creation of new employment opportunities.
- Increasing national income.
Currently, UPEHC membership exceeds 3,500 members representing:
- Small, medium, and large growers.
- Agricultural cooperatives and associations.
- Processors.
- Exporters.
- Service Providers.
- Investors.
The following are major service rendered by UPEHC to members:
- Provision of agricultural inputs.
- Climatic information through a national network of automated weather stations.
- Availing spraying equipment, pesticides, and packing materials.
- Packing, processing, and cold storage services.
- Coordinating inland, sea, and air shipping contracts, as well as export contracts.
- Extension services through a state-of-the-art MTI network.
- Educational and promotional programs.

Training Course Completed
A UPEHC-led trinaing course in the Netherlands was completed in February 2009.

HortiEgypt 2009: Between 11th and 14th of January 2009, HortiEgypt exhibition held its third event in Cairo. The exhibition encompasses two main fairs; FruitiVeg and Flora Egypt.
